COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This Health course combines with the 9th grade Physical Education course to complete the 1 credit graduation requirement per State of Michigan. This Health Course will encourage and enable students to gain awareness, knowledge and the skills necessary for an overall healthy lifestyle. This class will focus on Mental, Social, and Emotional health; Nutrition; Personal Fitness/Wellness; Substance Abuse and Human Development focusing on Abstinence only. This course will help students learn ways to prevent diseases, lower health risks, and being safe in their community and environment.
Health Education State Standards:
1. The student will apply health promotion and disease prevention concepts and principles to personal, family, and community health issues.
2. The student will access valid health information and appropriate health promoting products and services.
3. The student will practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.
4. The student will analyze the influence of cultural beliefs, media, and technology on health.
5. The student will use goal setting and decision-making skills to enhance health.
6. The student will demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and other social skills, which enhance health.
7. The student will demonstrate advocacy skills for enhanced personal, family, and community health.

The student will be evaluated based on their individual efforts. Four areas of evaluation will determine each student’s grade. The four areas of evaluation are:

2.Daily Activities/Assignments
3.Tests/Quizzes/Project Based Learning
4.Homework
Grading Scale:
A 100% - 93% B+ 89% - 88% C+ 79% - 78% D+ 69% - 68%
A- 92% - 90% B 87% - 83% C 77% - 73% D 67% - 63%
B- 82% - 80% C- 72% - 70% D- 62% - 60%
F 59% or Below

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Student are expected to:
Follow all student handbook policies and school rules.
Make up absent work within the same number of class days as the number of days absent
Turn in your work on time. LATE ASSIGNMENTS MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED, unless permission was given early ( Out of town, family emergency, etc)
No food, drinks, coats or bags in class. Water will be permitted with permission.
Be in the classroom prior to the bell ringing.
Students are allowed five (5) passes for the semester with the use of their planner.
Take the Cumulative Semester exam.
Not copy other student’s work (assignments, quizzes, tests, etc) Consequences per student handbook are:
1st offense Zero, parent contact, three (3) after school sessions
2nd offense Zero, parent contact, one (1) day O.S.S.
3rd offense Zero, parent contact, three (3) O.S.S. days, and failure in course

- Health Services because this career path is related to the promotion of health and treatment of disease. Possible careers are Physical Therapist, Nurse, and Athletic Trainer.
INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
- The student will be expected to participate daily and fully of ones ability, whether within a cooperative group or an individual activity. The student will also be expected to tolerate others.
- Health issues will be discussed through lecture, group discussions and role-playing. Video presentations and guest speakers will also be a means of learning current health issues. An interactive text is also an option for students to look at the book on-line, play games and watch videos.
